If you have the flu or flu-like symptoms or illness, knowing what to do is essential to keeping you and others healthy. Symptoms generally include fever greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit and respiratory symptoms -- cough, stuffy or runny nose, or sore throat. You may often experience fatigue and sometimes, vomiting and diarrhea. You could experience symptoms for seven to 10 days, with the fever subsiding within three or four days.
The flu, or influenza, is caused by a virus, which means antibiotics won't cure you. Antiviral medications, like Tamiflu and Relenza, may be prescribed and can shorten the duration of sick time by about a day, but you must start the medicine within 48 hours of the first symptom. These medications can be expensive.
If you cannot manage symptoms on your own, if you want an antiviral prescription, or if you are experiencing chest pain, have difficulty breathing, have blue toes or fingers, or feel like passing out when you stand up, make an appointment at one of our clinics.
